First impressions set the tone for any property. Our new entrance gate at Hacienda Guadua Bamboo in Colombia proves that Guadua angustifolia works exceptionally well as a durable, high-performance architectural cladding solution. Completed on 26 September 2024, this massive 28-meter-wide entrance showcases how custom steel engineering, concrete, and premium bamboo poles work together to create a lasting, imposing entryway.
Instead of sticking to conventional building methods, we designed a hybrid system. A robust steel and concrete skeleton handles the heavy structural loads of the wide-span opening, while timber-grade bamboo serves as a secure, beautiful face filling.

Phase 1: Heavy Civil Works, Foundations, Sloped Walls, and Tile Cladding
A structure spanning 28 meters requires a rock-solid foundation to prevent settling and keep the sliding mechanisms operating flawlessly over time. We started by executing deep excavations, tying structural steel rebar, and pouring reinforced concrete footing.
Flanking the central driveway are two structural masonry walls, each measuring exactly 4.60 meters wide. To follow the natural incline of the landscape, we gave the top of these walls a distinct slope that stands 3.90 meters tall at the highest point and drops to 3.60 meters at the lowest.
We rendered the brick walls with a robust cement mortar mix to get a perfectly flat, uniform surface, leaving an open-air triangular recess at the top of each structure. Next, the main concrete surfaces were clad with multi-toned stone-look tiles for a rugged, textured backdrop.
As the definitive finishing touch for the walls, we custom-fitted a bamboo balustrade into those upper frames. This decorative horizontal frieze features precisely spaced, uniform vertical bamboo segments. To make them fit perfectly between the two horizontal header poles, every single vertical piece was hand-carved on both ends. Because the top frame is sloped, each pole required a custom joint combination: a traditional fish mouth cut at the base and an angled fish mouth cut at the top to match the incline. The entire assembly was finished with a special lasur coating to protect against UV and moisture, adding a warm contrast to the stone tile below.
Phase 2: Custom Steel Frame Fabrication, Manual Bamboo Fitting, and Weather Protection
The core of the security entrance relies on two massive sliding gate doors. Each individual door measures 5.40 meters wide by 2.60 meters tall, giving us a combined clear opening of 10.80 meters when fully open. To prevent sagging and handle daily operational stress, we custom-fabricated the structural skeleton of these doors using heavy-duty 12 x 6 cm steel tubes.
To hold our bamboo securely without trapping moisture, we welded 4 cm wide steel strips at the top and bottom on both sides of the frame to form custom U-channels. Crucially, these strips were engineered with 1 cm spacers. This small gap provides vital breathing room, ensuring rainwater runs off freely instead of pooling inside the metal tracks, protecting both the steel and the bamboo from premature degradation.
For the gate filling, we opted for individual Guadua bamboo poles with a uniform diameter of 6 to 7 cm. Each treated pole was cut to size and individually inserted directly into the custom-built steel channels. This technique locks the bamboo securely inside the rigid metal borders, creating a solid, tamper-proof barrier that highlights the clean vertical lines of the golden-brown Guadua angustifolia stalks.
To ensure long-term durability against the intense tropical elements of the Valle del Cauca, the bamboo poles were finished with a specialized lasur coating. This premium translucent finish penetrates deep into the outer layer to prevent weathering, UV damage, and cracking while preserving the natural, organic texture of the bamboo.
Safety was a paramount engineering consideration for sliding gates of this weight. To ensure the doors can never slide out of their caster clamps or tip over, we engineered a 1-meter structural overlap into the system. When closed, each 5.40-meter gate extends a full meter past the wall edge, keeping the entire system securely anchored within its guiding tracks.
The final result shows a striking balance between clean concrete lines, rugged tile textures, and the vibrant, uniform finish of our weather-protected Guadua poles.
