Adopt a Bamboo – Phase #1

At Hacienda Guadua Bamboo we embarked on our reforestation journey in 2021 by planting the first 163 Guadua angustifolia plants as part of our Adopt a Bamboo program. Sector #1 was the first plot planted, currently 6 more sectors are reforested with bamboo. This initiative was a response to the degradation and erosion of soils due to previous intensive cattle grazing activities. Our goal here is not commercial gain but rather the restoration of soils and biodiversity so that other farm owners in the region can witness the positive impact first hand (and hopefully get inspired to start planting as well).

Initially, the growth of the bamboo plants was stunted, with the leaves displaying a yellowish-green hue during the first 1.5 years. However, in 2023, we introduced organic fertilizers such as manure and activated bamboo charcoal. This intervention proved to be pivotal as the bamboo plants began to thrive, exhibiting accelerated growth and overall improved health.

Colombia typically experiences two rainy seasons lasting three months each. However, the occurrence of the El Niño phenomenon has disrupted this pattern, with a notable absence of significant rainfall expected to persist until at least September 2024. This anomaly has also contributed to a slowdown in the development of Sector #1.

We anticipate substantial transformations of the plantation by the end of 2025. Through our ongoing efforts and interventions, we are looking forward to the positive changes that lie ahead in our reforestation endeavors.
