Bamboo species of the genus Chimonobambusa are running bamboos with swollen nodes that bear thorns in many species, they have 3 branches at the nodes.

Chimonobambusa bamboos grow native in: Assam, China, East Himalaya, Japan, Myanmar, Taiwan, Tibet and Vietnam.

In China and Japan they refer to this genus as "square bamboo". Several species have been introduced in Europe and the USA and are grown in cultivation.
