Otatea is a genus of clumping bamboos native to Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and possibly Nicaragua and Costa Rica as well. The name derives from the nahuatl otatl, meaning "bamboo". The genus comprises 2 species, of which the best-known is of the Mexican weeping bamboo (Otatea acuminata).

Otatea bamboo grows on the Pacific slopes, from Sonora through the Central Plateau and Transversal Volcanic Ridge, locally in ravines in low deciduous forest of the slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Chihuahua (except in arid and semiarid regions and mountain tops), and on the slopes of the Gulf of Mexico to Central America between 200 and 2,000 m altitude.
