Most bamboos have a very waxy outer layer which makes them very difficult to stain in their natural condition. Scraping or heavy sanding are labor intensive and they reduce the strength of the bamboo pole. Therefore we prefer to use heat treatment to stain bamboo. Finishes such as lacquers or varnish can be applied after burning the outer layer. In this example I will use paste wax.
