Is it Possible to Stain Bamboo?

by Lester
(Colorado)

Hello, I have obtained a few bamboo poles which I would like to stain for decorative use in my home. I have tried to apply some wood stain to the culm but it rubs off easily. Is there anything I have to do previously to the staining (sanding, sealer,...)?

Staining Bamboo Poles
by: Stephane Schroder

Hi Lester. Sanding the bamboo canes will help a lot, the goal is to eliminate the waxy outer layer, in order for the stain to absorb. Keep in mind though, the outer layer is the part that contains all the strength of a bamboo, so make sure not to eliminate all of it.

A better way to "naturally stain" bamboo is to apply heat by holding the poles over an open fire (make sure to rotate the pole, to avoid dark spots and irregular color). A flame torch also works but on dry bamboo it's difficult to avoid spots.

By applying heat, the bamboo will get a darker color, the more you burn it the darker it will get. It may not be necessary to add extra stain to the bamboo, but if you do, you'll see that the stain won't rub off anymore! You could also add a lacquer coating or wax after the heat treatment which will give the canes a nice satin or glossy finish.

Check out my short video on how to stain bamboo with a flame torch.
