Bamboo species from the genus Elytrostachys are native to Central America and northern South America; Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru and Bolivia.
They usually occur in wet lowland and forests at moderate elevations.
