The name Drepanostachyum derives from the Greek words 'drepanon' (sickle) and 'stachys' (spike), alluding to the flowering branchlets which are sickle-like curved.
Bamboo species of the genus Drepanostachyum are subtropical clump-forming bamboos, but also survive in lower temperate zones. Their native distribution is in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, and China where they mainly grow in the forest understorey of warm broad-leaved subtropical forests at 1,000-2,200m.
Drepanostachyum is a source of animal browse and fodder, with small, rather crooked culms that are used for weaving. It is also a useful component of bio-engineering for slope stabilization along sub-tropical roadsides.
