Bamboo species of the genus Diandrolyra are native to the humid rain forests of Brazil. They usually grow near running water in densely shaded sites.
Diandrolyra was originally described on the basis of a cultivated plant but was rediscovered in the wild by T.R. Soderstrom in 1974. The genus Diandrolyra counts only 2 species, but there are at least 4 more species unsubscribed.
