Because of the wide variety in sizes and finish colors, all bamboo furniture is produced by custom order only. Different color finishes can be applied, from the natural yellow to a dark brown color. Finish colors are obtained by heat treatment which is an ancient and natural stain process for bamboo. The waxy outer layer of bamboo does not absorb any stain or finish in it's natural condition. Stain, lacquer, varnish etc. will scratch and peel off easily if not properly treated in advance.

FAQ's about Bamboo Furniture Costa Rica

1. Is all your Bamboo Furniture made in Costa Rica?

Yes, all our furniture is designed in Costa Rica and build by highly skilled Costa Rican furniture makers. For this reason buying tropical bamboo furniture from Costa Rica is a great way to acknowledge and support local artisans.

2. Where is your store/showroom located?

We do not operate a showroom or furniture store in Costa Rica. The reason is fairly simple; managing different store locations throughout the country would dramatically increase overhead costs and thus affect prices accordingly. However, if you are interested to see the designs first hand please contact us for an appointment.

3. How strong is Bamboo Furniture?

Of all bamboo species Guadua and Phyllostachys are one of the world most strongest bamboo's available. Guadua has a higher tensile strength than steel and is therefore often referred to as "vegetal steel".

4. What kind of bamboo do you use?

Guadua angustifolia and Phyllostachys aurea is used for the majority of the bamboo furniture designs. These bamboos are locally grown on Costa Rican plantations and are harvested in a sustainable manner.

5. Is your Bamboo Furniture quality guaranteed?

Yes, the bamboo furniture is quality guaranteed. No insect infestation, and no lose joints after 2 months,... this furniture is build with pride and to last a lifetime.

6. Can I order a custom design?

You can virtually order any design, or resize existing furniture from the collections to your needs. For a price quotation please provide us with a picture example and measurements of your favorite design.

7. What is the estimated lead time?

Because of the wide variety of sizes and finish colors, all bamboo furniture orders are custom build. Therefore, it is advisable to place your order at least 2 weeks in advance, for larger projects this could be 4-6 weeks.

8. What about insect infestation?

The bamboo immunization process (replacing natural sugar content with salt) kills all possible bugs and insects without fumigation or the use of toxic chemicals. The immunization process changes the molecular composition of the bamboo and makes it non-attractive for future insect attacks.

9. Is it possible to scratch the furniture finish?

Yes but only if you try really hard. Local artisans use bamboo in its natural beige/yellow color or apply a heat treatment technique (which I demonstrate in this video: how to stain bamboo) to the outer layer of the bamboo to obtain a typical brown or ebonized color. Artisans use this technique because bamboo does not absorb any type of stain in its natural condition.

10. Does the furniture comes assembled?

Almost all the bamboo furniture designs comes fully assembled. Larger items such as beds come knockdown (easy handling + and transportation).

11. Do you use metal drawer rails?

To ensure smooth movement, metal rails are used on all of the drawers. Their is also the option of lining the insides of the drawers with a special palm weaving called "petate".

12. Do I need a box spring if I buy one of your bamboo beds?

No all bamboo beds include a wooden mattress support system, and thus are designed to work best with only a mattress.

13. Do you ship furniture to the US?

Currently we do not export bamboo furniture outside Costa Rica.
