Bamboos of the genus Alvimia are found on the Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil where rainfall exceeds 1,300 mm/year, without a marked dry season.
The name Alvimia is dedicated to the botanist Paulo de T. Alvim, director of Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau (CEPEC), Itabuna, Brazil, who discovered this bamboo.
